The Specialist Process Engineer is responsible for the leading, managing and deploying process change programs locally and across Barclays Africa. This includes, but not limited to, collaborating with Exco and Manco on the strategic intent of Barclays Franchises and Business Units, aligning the architectural landscape for benchmarked practices thus ensuring effective and efficient business value streams, optimal integration of processes, people and technology by interactively analysing, researching, designing, recommending and implementing innovative and cost efficient business processes within RBB Operations and across Barclays Africa.
The Process Specialist will further create and maintain a centralised process and knowledge management repository; and ensure adherence to methodologies and standards by all contributors. This would include training and development initiatives and programs across RSA and Africa, by developing and compiling best practice material, lead and manage training programs, certification requirements and talent retention and management.
To manage Barclays Global Process Communities on shared learning, operating models, process improvement best practices, process modelling, governance, legislation and compliance requirements, IT and Technology, Process Architecture, skills and developments and industry related practices.
To propose solutions to fully address the business requirements needed to optimise the business. The Specialist Process Engineer, in conjunction with the Process Architect, would be the ultimate authorities to determine the process architectural landscape and design that address business problems and needs by defining the overall business requirements with due consideration to process efficiency, cost effectiveness, risk, compliance and local legislation.
The Specialist Process Engineer would lead cross-functional teams to provide end-to-end solutions. To establish a sound basis, approach and methodology through which business process management (BPM) can be driven throughout the respective business units, in order to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness Consulting, Coaching and Mentoring
  • Motivate, Lead and Direct project team members and ensure that their efforts are recognised.
  • Engage, motivate and coach Process Engineers (Level 1, 2 & 3) towards achieving goals.
  • Consult and strategise with Business Units to achieve Goals and Targets.
  • Participate in the creation and implementation of Employee Opinion Survey (EOS) actions for the team.
  • Groom and mentor Process Engineers (Level 1, 2 & 3) to handle wider span & higher responsibilities.
  • Pursue teams' development to increase process improvement skills and personal effectiveness, acknowledging strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Share best practices both within Projects and between team members across the business.
  • Act as back up to the Manager: Business Process Efficiency at team level forums, project management/ steering committees and other key meetings with senior stakeholders.
  • Develop training and learning material as per approved Barclays Methodologies
  • Facilitate and Train cross functional staff in approved methodologies, best practices and problem solving skills.
Process Optimisation and Design
  • Assist in Strategic Business process management compilation and execution within RBB.
  • Compilation and implementation of standardised business process improvement and re-engineering methodologies.
  • Undertake business process improvement initiatives aimed at improving efficiencies and effectiveness of operations.
  • Conduct Business Performance Diagnostics to assess Process Maturity Levels.
  • Identify the scope (core and sub–processes) and life cycle of business processes within area of responsibility taking into account the Absa standards.
  • Ensure that processes and procedures as well as system designs are integrated into a single business solution.
  • Apply scientific principles and business inputs to refine and re-engineer as-is business process (as well as newly to-be refined processes) into best scenario to-be processes to enhance customer experience and profitability.
  • Provide input into to the documentation, formalisation and validation of the to- be concept and design proposals.
  • Facilitate and integrate process designs, improvements and maintenance amongst role-players.
  • Effectively network, liaise, advice and communicate with all stakeholders.
  • Conduct pro-active detection of process bottle-necks and high level operational value chain.
  • Promote the generic functionality and end-to-end value chain ownership, breaking barriers to silo thinking and behaviours, within Business Units.
  • Apply various applicable Industrial / Systems Engineering principles in process constraints and opportunity identifications, as well as Solutioning.
  • Define process performance criteria and requirements in terms of time, cost, resources (people, systems, financials) etc.
  • Proactively participate in business efficiency improvement forums and to play an active role in the change initiatives process, by assessing and recommending the feasibility of change request received.
  • Act as coach to business (line managers) and other process custodians regarding process re-engineering and improvement methodologies and principles.
  • Interact and network with own management team and other SBU process engineers (custodians) in order to ensure alignment and integration of operations.
  • Facilitate and integrate process designs, improvements and maintenance amongst role-players and effectively network with all stakeholders.
  • Facilitate project meetings and workshops, engaging stakeholders, subject matter experts and attendees at all levels.
  • Drive change through cross-functional team.
  • Mentor Junior Process Engineers.
  • Build relationships with senior management, project team and stakeholders and secure their support to achieve project goals.
  • Carry out operational re-engineering projects and process reviews as required by global, regional or in-country operations.
  • Train, coach and prepare local and international operations for the introduction of new products and services.
  • Prepare local and international BU processes for migration to Centres of Excellence or third party approved suppliers.
  • Take ownership in the management and ensure delivery of key aspects of an overall operational design.
  • Build working relationships with project team and stakeholders and secure their support to achieve project goals.
Research and Development
  • Research Process Improvement best practices and methodologies locally and internationally
  • Research Financial Industry Market Trends with respect to Products, Services, Process and Technology
  • Research Architectural Landscapes and related supporting Technologies
  • Attend Seminars, Conferences and Public invitations related to Process, Improvement Methodologies, Technology, Systems Engineering and Industry Related.
  • Compile, document and share learning’s for cross development
  • Maintain Business Process Management Library
  • Engage with Technology Partners for technology related matters – hardware, software, infrastructure and support.
  • Benchmark Barclays Technologies, Practices and Operating Models.
  • Actively partake in industry forums (Industrial Engineering, Lean and Six Sigma), thereby presenting Absa and Barclays and adding value to the industry.
Business Analysis
  • Perform business impact analysis in liaison with line managers on any change that is imposed on the current operational environment.
  • Measure and baseline all current main value chains' performance and comparison of the To–Be process performance.
  • Provide and indentify opportunities for optimisation improvements of operational cost base and where process methodologies can be applied.
  • Apply basic methodologies to identify bottom line and economic profit enhancement opportunities, where it relates to cost efficiencies or income enhancements.
  • Liaison with line managers on changes that is imposed on current operational environment.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities in the business regarding Quality, Cost & Delivery.
  • Deliver QNI (Quality Net Income) & financial savings through projects.
  • Responsible for the on-time collection and analysis of all metrics related to projects and the production of agreed format reports for the monthly business reviews.
  • Coordinate and facilitate analysis, assessment and design workshops and initiatives to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Facilitate and conduct Joint Application Design (JAD) sessions with cross functional role players to design, develop, and review processes.
Project Management
  • Manage and coordinate (assist in) implementation efforts of enhancements and change initiatives. Ensure inputs are provided to changes are reflected on appropriate Absa supporting and training documentation.
  • Ensure all projects and change initiatives impacting a single area are well co-ordinated and change impact is controlled.
  • Deliver project objectives to achieve desired quality and impact, within time period planned and within approved budget.
  • Responsible for project stakeholder communication and management before and during the implementation.
  • Provide Project Management capability to setup, manage and control projects throughout their lifecycle.
  • Execute medium/ high impact performance improvement projects within agreed time frames across Barclays Africa.
  • Ensure smooth transition to re-designed processes and provide project management capability to setup, manage and control projects throughout their lifecycle.
  • Identify and manage work stream interdependencies, risks and issues affecting the successful delivery of the project/ programme.
  • Set up processes to monitor and manage changed processes and maintain their sustainability.
Business Alignment & Subject Matter Expert (SME) inputs
  • Maintain interaction with business analysts, change agents as well as project managers to create synergies before / during / after process re-engineering and implementation.
  • Interact and attend meetings and workshops to ensure that the major change and small enhancement initiatives impacts are pro-actively identified so that implementation can be coordinated.
  • Represent Business Efficiency at various change councils, delivery councils and other such forums.
  • Ensure that promises to business are met and delivered, and highlight constraints for implementation time periods.
  • Identify impact of process changes on Job Descriptions of staff that executes work within the process.
Controls, Compliance and Administration
  • Ensure adherence to and compliance with governance, risk policies, procedures and compliance policies.
  • Project dashboard and time sheets updated on time per agreed cycle.

Essential/Basic Qualifications

Education and Experience Required:
  • NQF level 7 / BCom / BSC degree required.
  • UML (Unified Modelling Language)
  • ARIS Process Design
  • Post Graduate Engineering Degree from top tier institutions will be advantageous: MTech / MEng / MSc Industrial engineering (or Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical will also be considered) or MBA qualification.
  • Project management qualification (PMP) Certification.
  • Scientific methodologies associated with efficiency improvements, i.e. queuing theories, Process Modelling, BPR and Lean methodologies.
  • ITIL V3
  • 10 Years’ experience spread across Business Analysis, IT Service Management and Project Management within the financial services industry.
  • Prior experience in leading process definition and re-engineering initiatives and producing high quality material
  • Prior experience in delivering large scale process re-engineering or change management projects and leading of delivery teams.
  • BCom degree
  • Previous management exposure
